What may be in contention may be people's rights, what is right; what is the right way to approach, perceive, understand, predict and control; etc. Inappropriate favoritism is unbalanced and biased. There may be bias in conceptions of what is inappropriate or balanced. Bias can not be totally eliminated. There is conflict between people who believe that they have eliminated all bias and those who contend that all bias can not be eliminated. Those who believe that they have eliminated all bias are less balanced in their view of life than those be believe that bias can only be minimized, but not totally eliminated. Thus those who believe that they have eliminated all bias are themselves more biased than those who believe that nobody can eliminate all bias. Conceit is not balanced in self- conception. It is especially difficult to minimize bias which originates in self-referential relationships. Often bias can be minimized by cooperative communal efforts which balance the biases of some over against the biases of others; the biases being those of persons, ideals, ideas, goals, groups, nations, cultures, sub-cultures, etc. Tragically, bias often originates in cooperative communal efforts which become perverted and become transformed into a communal game of mutual self deception in which there is pretense that bias has been transcended, absolute truth discovered, uncertainty banished. Such collusive games maximize bias. The games conceal themselves in self- referential lies. To minimize bias it is essential to work in a sustained way upon helping people to be free to be open and honest in sharing their biases, so that in a communal way biases may be balanced out by mutual recognition of what they are and how they relate to each other. Collusions hide biases and make it impossible to minimize the tragic consequences of biases by balancing them out against each other in open public dialogue. Exclusivity is not wise. Balance is central to wisdom. Integrity involves balance, not exclusivity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
