Yet, the people are in conflict because they embody ideals which are in conflict. In a sense the conflicts among people are due to the impediments of unresolved conflicts among ideals. To resolve conflicts among people we need to resolve conflicts among the ideals which the people embody. This may entail leading people to choose different transcendent ideals to embody---by helping them to see that their conflicts are the consequence of imprudent choices of ideals. Personal and communal integrity have not often been openly treated as ideals which should be central to lives of people and their communities. Yet by raising integrity to the level of an ultimate concern---much energy and imagination can be directed towards the challenge of resolving conflicts among ideals and their people. We need to promote integrative ideals and their embodiments. Integrity as an ideal has not been central to the history of western thought. Integrity is not one of the central concepts in terms of which western intellectual and religious leaders have attempted to integrate their thinking. Instead dialogue has tended to disintegrate in arguments over the nature of and the embodiments of ultimate reality, truth, logic, authority, power, justice, law, order, and love. The search for ultimates has diverted attention away for a cooperative search for a union of personal and communal integrity. What value or ideal merits respect---if showing it respect helps to undermine personal and communal integrity? Is there any value or ideal of such ultimate importance---that it would be wise to show it ultimate respect at the price of losing personal and communal integrity? Would showing such respect be idolatrous? The search for integrity will entail the development of supportive integrative ideals and values. Such ideals and values will focus upon the improvement of open and honest communication by the creation of fail-safe contexts in which honesty is not punished, even if the honesty reveals non-conformal thoughts, feelings, insights, desires, fears, visions, emotions, etc. The charitable expansion of freedoms of communication is a supportive integrative ideal which merits respect. Similar considerations relate to the ideals of balance, mutuality, charity, generosity, humility, and forgiveness. The search for integrity gives meaning to life. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
