We often find it hard to acknowledge the debilitating connections between our emotional and cognitive lives, because we have ideals which say that such connections should not exist; and we foolishly choose to deny their reality---rather than to deal realistically with the tragic aspects of our emotional and cognitive lives in which we lack integration. Any ideal which causes us to deny the reality of our dis-integration---is an ideal which causes further dis-integration, and such an ideal should thereby be subject to unbiased assessment and judgment. Cognitive growth and advancement is inhibited by any failure to integrate our emotional and cognitive lives. Success in coming to terms with the dis-integrative effects of our failures to integrate our emotional and cognitive lives---is a success which will tend to promote growth and advancement in both our cognitive and emotional lives. We need to work on overcoming the debilitating effects of our immaturity as expressed in our: double-binds, taboos, guilt, mutual-control, legalisms, alienative judgments, self-righteousness, exclusivity, arrogances, etc. People who regard objectivity as an ultimately important ideal---tend to be distrustful of any leadings of emotions. They are lead by their fear of emotions, but are unable to perceive how they are themselves lead by their own emotions---which are engendered by their dis-integrative ideals. They do not recognize that denying and repressing emotions is not the way to avoid bias. Because they are unable to be open and honest about their own emotions---they are tragically biased and unable to grow and make advancements in cognitive and emotional living. People who regard being in control as of ultimate importance---are unable to give themselves fully to the development of personal and communal relationships. It is impossible to grow to maturity under the control of any one person. They are dominated by the desire to understand, predict and control all relationships in which they become involved; and so inhibit the growth of their personal relationships into integrative maturity. Their ideals are tragically dis-integrative. Salvation entails the integration of cognitive and emotional lives in ways which transcend exclusively valuing either cognitive or emotional living.
