To be effective they must honestly believe in the ideals of their specialized discipline. They must be effective communicators of their interest, enthusiasm, and belief in the ideals of their discipline. Such personal communication depends upon the quality of inter-personal relationships, as much as upon technical qualification. Purely technical qualifications are not the basis for effectively participating in the kinds of interpersonal relationships which communicate the interest, enthusiasm and beliefs of a specialist to the next generation that may keep the specialty alive. Such communication depends critically upon a healthy balance between technical and personal-relationship qualifications. The people prone to be highly qualified in technical skills are unlikely to be highly qualified in personal-relationship skills. They are prone to think that the effective teachers are effective primarily because of their technical skills---and not perceive the essential role which is played by balance between technical skills and personal-relationship skills. Research specialists who are highly qualified in technical skills emphasize additional training in technical skills as being the key to improving the effectiveness of the teaching of science. In our technocratic society research scientists in graduate schools who have both this kind of bias and the political power to make their bias be the basis in efforts to improve the teaching of science in schools from the lowest age groups to the highest age groups. For us to transcend the crisis in science education we must find ways to transcend all such systematic biases of specialists whose perspectives are so narrow that they do not perceive their own biases.
