Personal experiences are undeniably real to the person having them. It is helpful to encourage others to "own" their own real experiences; i.e., to resist external pressures to ignore, deny, or regard their own experiences as improper. Intimate personal experiences are not objective realities to be dealt with in the manner of scientists and legalists. They cannot be described and analyzed by other persons more accurately than by the person having the experiences. Intimate personal experiences cannot be understood and controlled more effectively by others than by the owner of them. It is futile to deny the reality of intimate personal experiences. It is impossible to relate intimately to another person without acknowledging their intimate personal experiences. To ignore, deny, or regard their experiences as evil, is to alienate yourself from them---the opposite of relating intimately. People who are alienated from each other cannot work cooperatively in resolving problems and/or conflicts. For this reason, there are very practical reasons for acknowledging other persons' experiences. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
