Thus personally meaningful communication entail self-referential aspects. It is impossible to participate in personally meaningful communication and/or dialogue without being involved in self-referential behavior. Scientists value objective behavior which by common consent is understood to exclude self-referential behavior. One cannot be objective about a situation, reality, person, or issue in which one is highly involved in a personal way. If consideration of the situation, reality, person, or issue entails self-referential behavior one is not being objective. The scientists who aspire to purely objective behavior may achieve their aspiration by a number of patterns of behavior: Such purists may avoid all participation in communication/dialogue which is personally meaningful so as to avoid all self-referential behavior. They may do this by adopting a highly impersonal manner of approach to all situations, including situations which involve normal persons in self- referential behavior. They may systematically avoid situations which would normally entail self-referential behavior. They may participate in collusive games of mutual self-deception according to which they perceive their self-referential behavior as being objective, even though it is not. In these ways scientists may succeed in thinking of themselves as being successful in achieving their ideal of always being objective. Scientists who have the responsibility of helping students learn science are in a double bind situation. To motivate students with integrity they must engage in self- referential behavior; yet all their graduate school training directed them to value objectivity and similar values above personal values.
