A value system which lacks integrity is clearly not as valuable as a value system which has integrity, which is coherent, hangs together. An incoherent value system entails internal conflicts between particular values and lacks any way of resolving such conflicts which the value system affirms as having supreme value. Such unresolvable internal conflicts are manifested in conflicts between people who are dedicated deeply to the values which are in conflict with each other. Because such people share no common transcendent value in terms of which to resolve such value conflicts, they engage in power confrontations in which the question is "Who will coerce whom most effectively?" The participants see such power confrontations and conflicts as effective means of affirming their favored values, and themselves as effective servants of their favored values. Thus they gain fulfillment and satisfaction through participation in power confrontations and conflict, yet they do not gain not as complete fulfillment and satisfaction as they might in a community which shared a coherent value system within which value conflicts are resolved in a charitable way. The value systems of some communities clearly lack integrity if they lead members of the communities to have desires and make choices which undermine the integrity of their communities and their ability to propagate the value systems. Such a value systems are not likely to survive, because they are prone to lead supporters to act in ways which will destroy the value communities. A value community is destroyed when its members fail to be in intimate communication with each other. A collection of people is not a community if they are not in communication with each other. Thus a value system which promotes alienation, distrust, estrangement, excommunication, shunning, rejection, etc. tends to have less survival value than a value system which places ultimate value upon promoting contexts within which members of the community desire and feel free to be open and honest with each other; to commune intimately with other members of the community.
