If firemen treat gasoline as if it were water, and pour it on a fire in an effort to put out the fire---they only make their problem worse. If political leaders see no difference between casual desires and real need---they lead people in inflationary ways, ignoring the differences between making unrealistic promises and actually setting realistic priorities regarding scarce resources. Legalistic moral people tend to compound the problems of human misunderstanding and alienation---when they fail to see the differences between non-conformity and sin. Many people of the 1980's "moral majority" can not see the difference between sin, and non-conformity to their provincial moral code of proper behavior. They regard non-conformists as sinners, and conformists as non- sinners; where conformity pertains to the particular provincial moral code of their own sub-culture. They fail to see the central role which is played by alienation in all problems; and that it is very helpful to problem solving to see the breaking down of humane dialogue as the essence of evil and sin, rather than to see non-conformity as the essence of evil and sin. Non-conformists are "sinners" only to the extent that "different" people fail to be in humane dialogue with them. So also, conformists are sinners only to the extent that they fail to be in dialogue with each other and different people. It is exceedingly important to recognize that there is a fundamental difference between people being "non-conformists" and their being "sinners". The power to make that difference, to create "deviance", rests in the hands of the most powerful people---who often tend to be conformists who are sinners; and proud of the alienation which they engender. The non-conformists who seek to overcome alienation can not always overcome the alienation generated by the conformists---not even by themselves becoming conformists to some particular provincial moral code of ethical behavior, in response to threats of alienation as a means of punishing deviant behavior. Those who self-righteously label others as "sinners" are the real sinners, the promoters of: alienation, estrangement, misunderstanding, communication blockage, collusions, evil and sin. Non-conformity is not sin. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
