Scientists seek to understand, and believe that they understand when they can predict future events; i.e., when on the basis of their understanding they have expectations which are fulfilled by the course of events. Because of their understanding they have successful expectations. Natural processes satisfy their expectations and confirm, affirm, them. When expectations are carried over into personal relationships there are some of the aspects of the scientists' expectations, but there are additional aspects also. We tend to think that we understand a person when the person behaves in ways we expect the person to behave; e.g., reasonably, logically, predictably, etc. When a person behaves as we expect, we are not disturbed by surprises. Expectations in personal relationships carry the connotation of desire. When Jack expects Jill to have supper ready when he gets home from the office, there is more than a prediction; he desires that she have it ready and will be more than disappointed in an unfulfilled prediction if it is not ready. In personal relationships expectations carry the connotation of "command". "I expect you to have the job done by 4 p.m." does not mean I predict that you will have the job done by 4 p.m. The fulfillment of expectations in a personal relationship constitute an affirmation of the person having the expectations; a statement to that person that that person matters. The measure of the importance of that person is the magnitude of what is sacrificed in order to fulfill the expectations. If the person fulfilling the expectations is willing to become alienated in order to fulfill the expectations, the person is guilty of idolatry; of worshiping the expecter. Some expecters feel fulfilled by people who cast them in the role of God. Such casting and acting tends, however, to be alienative. In an alienative society people tend to violate expectations when they become frustrated, angry and violent because of the alienation. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
