Some values can be recognized as creating barriers to dialogue, and so be called into question, if overcoming major dialogue barriers is an ultimate concern. It is helpful to recognize the various barriers to dialogue, and to see the relative importance of those barriers. It is most helpful to focus upon the barriers which occasion the most blockage, frustration, alienation, ignorance, isolation, etc. Elimination very minor barriers while major ones remain i place and unchallenged is not wise. Prudence may dictate patience in effort to eliminate major barriers, if eliminating them will take a great deal of effort, Their focus should be upon the most fruitful way to expect available resources. Sometimes that may involve working on minor barriers which can easily be overcome, Other times that will involve slow progress on overcoming major barriers which are difficult to deal with. It is wise to recognize what the barriers are and how to proceed in trying to overcome them. It is not wise to pretend that certain barriers are of no consequence and so ignore them. To overcome some barriers will require high levels of cooperation and communication --- in spite of the barriers' tendency to undermine cooperation and communication. What are the natures of various barriers to dialogue? Many pertain to people's motivations to speak, write, listen, read, and contemplate. Others pertain to the existence, openness, availability, and fidelity of channels of communication. Vocabulary can be a barrier if it can not point to or represent essential realities, if it embodies biases, or if it promotes confusion, The structure of languages can be a barrier by constraining the kinds of dialogue which are possible. Taboos, fears, laws, authorities, and traditions may constituent barriers of major proportions. All kinds of imprisonment inhibit dialogue. Hunger, sickness, weakness can block free dialogue. Personal lack of communication skills can prevent dialogue. So also can injustice, violence arrogance, blindness, deafness, insensitivity, exclusivity, darkness, noise, sloppy thinking, lack of common language, and lack of listeners/readers.
