We may seek the affirmation which we knew as infants and rarely know as adults. Perhaps we project our memories upon the universe as visions of the ultimate nature of reality---and so work to realize our childhood experiences in our adult universe. The love we knew as infants may become our adult ideal in non-cognitive ways which we can not capture in verbal statements. Yet, such a memorable vision may motivate our whole life, and be the basis for its integrity. There is no objective way to decide how real may be the vision. Its reality may be in our realization, rather than in any being independent of us. As adults we need to have that which we can trust and in which we may feel secure. We need a safe context, even as do infants. Our competitive world does not excel in providing contexts which are fail-safe. It is difficult to imagine new ways because competition promotes conformal behavior, rather than divergent behavior. Because we are contestants in earnest adult "games", we find it difficult to imagine new ways of living which would provide the sanctuaries for imagination, creativity, initiatives--- communication freedoms. We become perverted and turn even love into a competitive game with winners and losers. All the while we are trying to regain the sense of wholeness and security which we dimly remember from our infancy, and lost through the socialization process of our competitive culture. Our visions of heaven may be rooted in the security of our infancy. Yet, they may also be expressions of learned systematic notions about ideal living. We may mix our ideals and our fond memories and create a harsh vision of heaven, which lacks integrity. It is difficult for us to sort out the sources of our visions, and difficult to know which visions merit realization. This is a domain in which traditional objective analysis and prediction is impotent. Only transcendent insight and love can point the way to recover that which can make us whole. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
