Such respect encourages the arrogance and grants it stature. Those who are arrogant are affirmed in their arrogance. Their arrogance becomes a sign of their elevated status, their superiority, their authority. A King or Queen was expected to be rather disdainful of commoners. A president who associates too much with common people and adopts their manners is not respected. A messiah that eats at table with common people is criticized for improprieties. A certain amount of arrogance is expected of those of high position, and if they are not sufficiently arrogant they are not respected. Arrogance is a means to maintaining a pecking order. People, just like birds, feel more comfortable with a well defined pecking order than with an ambiguous pecking order. Members of a culture thus tend to promote means to keep pecking orders will defined. Among such means is arrogance enjoyed (?) by the elite, and encouraged by the commoners. Through arrogance the distinctions between the top and the bottom of a pecking order is maintained. The King and Queen rule in splendid isolation from the commoners. The full professor lectures at a splendid distance above the physical and intellectual level of the students---and feels no responsibility to listen to the uninformed opinions and feelings of the students. What King or Queen would stoop to take seriously the opinions and feelings of the lowest commoners? The pecking order must be maintained, and an appropriate amount of arrogance is necessary to maintain student respect towards professors. Without respect the students will not take the professors' directions seriously, and will tend to trust their own uninformed opinions and non-logical feelings---rather than the reasoned judgment of their superiors. The good students recognize these facts of life, and encourage the good professors to maintain their arrogance and distance. The good professors reward their good students for their mature judgment and good sense. Respected arrogance is mutually advantageous to both the arrogant and those commoners who aspire to qualify for positions of arrogance. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
