When never-failing is an ultimate concern---people tend towards conformal behavior that lacks imagination, creativity, vision initiative, and love. To be unconditionally open to new communications is to risk failure, for conventional standards will judge many new ways as failures. To love in a radical way is to be unconditionally open to new communications, to listen with ultimate sympathy. People who are intolerant of failure tend to work to undermine the works of Love, they do the evil work of excommunication. People who thus get out of touch with each other tend to be uninformed and in their ignorance make tragic mistakes. They fail to be responsive to teach other, and so do not meet each other in need. They tend to deny each other's personal needs, in order to meet the need to avoid conventional failure. Their commandment to never fail becomes the greatest commandment, their god. The commandment to never fail usually takes the more positive form of a commandment to compete and win in a contest to be better than all other contestants. It is an elitist commandment to do a good job at a worthy task for the purpose of being better than others. The focus is upon comparisons between levels of performance. When there are many competitors, comparisons tend to be reduced to quantitative measurements---and so competitors are encourages to focus their attention upon qualitative issues. Failure get defined in quantitative terms because success is defined in quantitative terms. Those who fail are ignored and are excommunicated. To avoid excommunication the contestants focus their attention on quantitatively measurable behaviors which undermine their ability to communicate. They are trapped in a tragic double bind. Both the contestants and the judges participate in the evil work of excommunication. All the participants in this tragic drama are threatened by any who attempt to pull out of the insane game, and are generally regarded as having gone insane. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
