Sexuality is discussed almost exclusively from an objective point of view---in terms of biology, psychology, sociology, property rights, and morality. Sexual behavior is discussed from the point of view of "observers", not from the point of view of participants. The attention is focused upon what is done with and two parts of bodies, not upon the quality of personal relationships, experiences, emotions, desires, fantasies, fears, hopes, visions, and other subjective aspects of sexual being. Our society is preoccupied with sex, yet is doing very little to give meaning to personal sexual experiences. We have very little attention given to myths to interpret personal sexual experiences and give them meaning in broader contexts. Our religious institutions tend to ignore or repress awareness of the actual sexual experiences of their members. It is not considered proper to openly discuss the full range of personal sexual experiences or to seek to discover/create generally satisfying ways to give them meaning with communal and personal integrity. We analyze sexual behavior, but do not contextualize it to give it meaning and integrity within a community which has integrity. Our sexuality is dominated by male preoccupations with ownership of and control of females. Preoccupations pertain to the proper places, roles, life-styles, and uses of females. Great amounts of energy are expended in education, science, churches, literary, and theological doctrines. We will do well to trace the fears which play roles in motivating such exclusive efforts. Exclusivity blocks listening and dialogue, the acts of love. Sexuality without love tends to be frustrating, aggressive, and violent. Such is the nature of exclusive paternalistic sexuality. So long as control is the motivation for efforts to deal with sexuality---we will not succeed in giving meaning to our deepest instincts and desires. Efforts to control will block the listening and dialogue which are essential to giving meaning to our personal sexual experiences. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
