When people take conflicting purposes for granted as being obviously desirable---the source of their conflict is not evident---and will baffle/frustrate them if they wish to reduce conflict. When it is evident to participants that they are in conflict, and over what they are in conflict, they may deal with their conflict openly---even if tragically and in violent ways. When participants in a conflict are within it taking for granted that they share common purposes (when they do not) then their conflict can be particularly perverted. Such hidden conflict can be particularly destructive. When people are engaged in open conflict they have the option of recognizing that violent means of resolution may be mutually disadvantageous---and discover that it is to their mutual advantage to structure cooperative ways to resolve the conflict. They may recognize that adopting the stance of winning at the cost of the opponent---will lead to a less satisfactory outcome---than adopting the stance that winning may involve the opponent coming out ahead also. The purpose may shift from defeating, punishing, excommunicating, destroying, or otherwise harming the opponent; and move in the direction of maximizing mutual awareness, understanding, dialogue, cooperation, problem solving, dilemma resolution and conflict resolution. Thus the open recognition of the existence of and the nature of conflict may be the first step to resolving it. When people are engaged in conflict which is hidden---they can not cooperate in finding ways to resolve the conflict to their mutual advantage. Cooperation in conflict resolution is possible only to the extent that there in mutual awareness, understanding, and dialogue regarding differences in ultimate purposes which may occasion conflict. To pretend that there is no conflict is to inhibit such essential mutuality. The person whose ultimate purpose is to maintain the appearance there is no conflict---can in an ultimate way block the possibility of resolving conflict which is generating great frustration, alienation, misunderstanding, crime, anger, fear, violence, sin, alienation, and waste.
