Real persons are not manageable; hey have minds of their own, ask embarrassing questions, take initiatives, challenge authority figures, and in general mess up carefully planned systematic procedures. Institutions charged with the management of large numbers of humans can not operate efficiently if they permit many real persons to exist within the institutions. To be effective such institutions must devise techniques to make humans more manageable and so make the whole institutional system more efficient and productive. To be reliable such techniques should be objectively demonstrable and amenable to repeated usage. They tend to be techniques of depersonalization. Educational institutions are well suited to depersonalization---to the extent that they tend toward: high standards, elitism, exclusivity, specialization, rationalization, scientific analysis, objectivity, technology and intimately related foci of concern --- especially in some concentrated combinations. The process of fulfilling institutional goals which are affirmed by highly responsible citizens may involve the depersonalization of the students involved. Such depersonalized students are more susceptible to management by people who have the conviction that they know better than anybody else what should be done, by whom, when, and for what reasons. The motivation of such managers may be benevolent, innocent, naive, malicious, selfish, self- less, etc. How readily they are able to carry out their program of management of people's energies, creativity, motivations, desires, etc.---will depend upon how thoroughly depersonalized the people are. Educational institutions are well suited to calling into question the basic presuppositions of humans who are oriented towards personal realities, values, priorities, perspectives, and relationships. Once the cognitive processes have been depersonalized in intellectual endeavors---other processes can more easily be depersonalized.
