But communication about sex is often difficult. We are often embarrassed in the effort. It is difficult to avoid distortions of our experiences, perceptions, visions, hopes, expectation, personalities, etc. in our efforts to communicate about our sexuality. Verbal communication in particular offers difficulties when attempting communication about sex. Sexuality is not essentially verbal, and in many ways is essentially non- verbal, perhaps pre-verbal. There certainly was sexual behavior before there was verbal behavior. In fact sexual behavior was central to all pre-verbal behavior. Pre- verbal communication was very centrally sexual, if not essentially sexual. A large fraction of all pre-verbal communication was sexual communication---the exchange of sexual information between organisms, and information preparatory to exchanging sexual information. Such communication was not about sexuality, it was sexuality. It is difficult to be sexual while communicating about sexuality. It is difficult to communicate about sexuality while not getting involved in sexual relationships of either negative or affirmative characters. In fact, it is difficult to separate sexuality and communication---perhaps because to our pre- verbal ancestors there was not that much difference between them. Personal communication is particularly apt to have much in common with sexual communication. Non- personal communication tends to have much less in common with sexual communication. Thus, we can avoid sexual communication by concentrating on non-personal communication. This is the case, for example, in the instance of specialists in the formal objective analysis of quantitative measurements extracted from objective perceptions; i.e., in the case of mathematical scientists. They tend to concentrate on other than subjective awareness, emotions, affection, bonding, participation, and communication; i.e., on other than the personal realm which has much in common with sexuality. Verbal "communications" about objective observations of organisms involved in sexual behavior is quite different than communicating about personal participation in sexual relationships. We communicate about our own sexuality only dimly. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
