Most college and university professors have spent no time in formal efforts to pass from one generation to another helpful insights into how to be a helpful teacher. Each generation of college and university professors is expected to reinvent effective teaching from scratch. Not even practicing teachers at the college and university level spend much of their time listening to each other's insights and suggestions regarding the ways of effectively helping students to grow through their intellectual and affective developmental stages. The few who do, tend to be isolated in departments of teacher education dealing with "lower level" future teachers. Such teachers are not respected by "upper level" professors who value course content more than students. What is especially odd is the way in which professors who do not know how to listen to what students have to say---are expected to help those students learn how to communicate. Since the professors are not interested in the students as persons, nor in what they have to say as persons, the focus of the courses on communication tends to be upon the mechanics of verbal communication. The content of the efforts at communication is regarded as of no concern, except that the content must not threaten the professor who is going to grade the paper. Is it any wonder that students show little interest in communicating---when there is nobody willing to listen to what they have say themselves? An essential step toward helping students improve their communication skills will be to improve the listening skills, ability, and interest of college and university professors. Professors who have blockages to listening to what students have to say---will not be able to educe meaningful communication efforts from their students. Students will not be interested in learning the mechanics of effective communication---unless they can see that there is somebody to be reached by the use of those mechanics. If the teacher of the mechanics can't be reached, who can? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
