Those types of responses which work satisfactorily a few times tend to be tried over and over, even in situations in which they are inappropriate. Such indiscriminate responses may be occasioned by habit and/or by the lack of ability to discriminate between situations so as to select a response appropriate to each situation. If someone is unable to discriminate between different situations, they are likely to respond to many situations with a response which has worked before---even though the situation in which it worked was quite different. A person may fall into the habit of responding in just one or a few ways, regardless of the situation. Scientists tend toward habitual: asking questions, analyzing, describing, classifying, measuring, manipulating, planning, computing, systematizing, etc. Religious legalists tend toward habitual: passing judgment, articulating moral and ethical regulations, rejecting and excommunicating nonconformists, condemning violators of their rules, attacking those who expose their idolatry, etc. Timid people tend toward habitual: withdrawing, retreating, submitting, being victim, obeying, etc. Insecure people tend toward habitual: blaming, insulting, repressing, suppressing, hating, ordering, attacking, etc. No compulsive pattern of habitual responses to various situations is as wise and helpful as a responsive life in which each situation is seen in its wholeness and the personal response life in which each situation is seen in its wholeness and the personal response is congruent with the wholeness of the situation. Such a responsive life will involve the recognition of people whose life is dominated by a compulsive habitual response pattern which is not congruent with the various situations encountered. When recognized such people may be helped to transcend their limited lives and live to see more vital ways of responding to people and situations with greater integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
