The nature of culture is one with the nature of its educational process. The form of the educational process is as important as the ostensible consent of the educational process. The medium, the process, is as much the message as is the conscious focus of the process. The educational process determines what content can and can not be powerfully transmitted. An educational process which is centered about dancing will convey quite different traditions than an educational process which is focused about getting "right" answers to artificial mathematical/"practical" problems whose values are never discussed. An educational process which is dominated by serious adults will convey quite different traditions than one which is subtly guided by adults watching children engaged in play within the context of community life. Separation from community life, specialization, and formalization all convey important messages---quite apart from the intended messages. Often the most powerful educational messages are those which are conveyed indirectly, covertly, unconsciously; i.e., extracurricularly. The formal curriculum may serve as the cover for the real educational process. Debates about curriculum may then fail to make sense until the nature of the real educational process is made apparent. We must ask in what ways the educational process is successful? What are the students really learning? What attitudes, conclusions, behavior patterns, ways of coping are they really developing? How are the students actually changing due to the educational process? The changes may be quite different than the intended changes, yet nevertheless constitute the "process" of the educational process. To evaluate the educational process we must determine the real changes which is occasions in students, not how well it accomplishes the changes. To focus only upon intended changes is to ignore some of the most important consequences of the educational process--- and maybe to hide heads in the shifting sands of time. Since the winds of change are constantly blowing keeping our heads hidden in the shifting sands of time is and endless task. Our educational process may be the way in which we teach the next generation how to hide their heads in the shifting sands of time. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
