Until such time/space portals are realized (which is unlikely) we shall have to be satisfied with psychic portals which are doorways to revolutionary insights. Revolutionary insights tend to be repressed by any culture which would be shaken to its foundations by such insights. Through taboos, collusions, legalism, traditions, etc. the dominant members who define each culture are likely to work to prevent passages through psychic portals to the revolutionary insights which would transform the culture. Any basic transformation of a culture is likely to upset power structures---something un-welcomed by the dominant members of the culture. Thus anyone seeking to pass through psychic portals may expect to encounter repressive influence on the part of the threatened culture. The person contemplating passage through a psychic portal must consider the risks entailed. Often return through the psychic portal is not possible; for the psychic portal it may be a one-way door because of natural consequences and/or social decisions. Passage through a psychic portal may so change the traveler as to make a return through the portal clearly undesirable. Passage through psychic portals may entail any of many forms of meditation such as prayer, Zen, Yogi, T.M., etc.; the use of drugs, the reading of a powerful novel, incongruous experiences, cultural conflict, violations of taboos, escape from a collusion, new sexual experiences, participation in an intimate group, exposure to new ideas, etc. Those who would prevent travel through the portals are likely to define the associated activities and foci as perverse, unnatural, evil, wrong, bad, etc. They fear the incongruity between the world-view they wish to preserve, and the experiences entailed in passage through the psychic portal. Thus they tend to repress behavior which will bring people to the threatening psychic portal. They do not respect the experimental method as a source of authority regarding meaningful personal relationships. They want their slaves' self esteem's to be dependent upon their traditional world-view. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
