The slave thus has a stake in the prestige of the owner and is bound to work to maintain and increase it. In a possessive society which accepts the ownership of persons---the prestige of an owner is likely to be related to the quality and quantity of possessions, including the persons possessed. The slave and the owner thus have stakes in each others POSSESSIONS, as to quality and quantity. Their worths are interdependent. Each acts to protect their state in the other's behavior, working to confirm the other's prestige because that prestige is a mirror image of one's own prestige. The contract between the two is likely to be a conservative contract, one which preserves the status quo. They are likely to work to prohibit vulnerability which is involved in meaningful change---for therein they might lose their POSSESSIONS and so their mutual prestige. Collusions, taboos, traditions, legalism, etc. are means to conservative ends. No participant is likely to cancel the ownership contract upon which their mutual self-esteem depends---even upon the request of the other as the other experiences the need for a passage from one developmental stage of life to another. The refusal to cancel the ownership contract may well block such a passage and block the growth which is dependent upon the passage. Most personal enslavement occurs informally within marriages, parent-child, teacher-student, professor- student, employer-employee, professional-client, etc. relationships. Within each such relationship, there is the risk that self-esteem will be dependent upon possession of the other as a slave, and upon arranging for the associated inhumane perversions of human relationships. Selling your own soul in return for ownership of another person's soul---thus generates numerous perversions. Such perversions generate frustration, communication blockages, alienation, and violence.
