Visions of new possibilities are not perceptions of present realities, but anticipations of possible futures. Our ability to pretend makes it possible for us to realize new creations of new beings. Through our ability to pretend we can shake the foundations of our present world and create new cultures, civilizations, technologies, sciences, religions, philosophies, cities, rural communities, etc. All too often, however, we pervert our ability to pretend. Not all pretending leads to the realization of the image of pretention. Not all visions can be realized through our finite powers of pretention. Often we are not willing to pay the price required for realization of our vision---yet we pretend that our vision is real. We act as if we have paid the price and realized our vision--- when we have not done so. Through pretension we deceive ourselves and others, and create collusions against reality and its love, power, and justice. Our ability to pretend through perversion is thus what enables us to be fundamentally dishonest about ourselves and others. Our ability to pretend enables us to live lies: that we will not die, that we are more beautiful than we are, that resources are not limited, that we can perfect ourselves, that the knowledge of good and evil promotes communal dialogue, that improved techniques are the keys to meaningful living, that power without love does not corrupt justice, that love without power can promote justice, that justice without power can realize itself, etc. Through such pretentions we lose touch with ourselves and others. We become alienated from reality and from each other---the condition called sin. Pretending which loses touch with the difference between the possible and the impossible becomes pretentious and destructive. The ability to pretend can be perverted. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
