Integration entails bringing different: people, ideas, ideals, values, principles, approaches, attitudes, facts, information, insights, knowledge and perspectives together in coherent ways which make sense. Personal and communal integrity and human COOPERATION all depend upon integration. Integration is undermined by human tendencies to exclude from consideration different: people, ideas, ideals, values, principles, approaches, attitudes, facts, information, insights, knowledge and perspectives. INCLUSIVITY is thus important in order to minimize human tendencies toward exclusivity. INCLUSIVITY need not be indiscriminate inclusivity of all possibilities without consideration being shown for other ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION. TOLERANCE is important in order to minimize human tendencies toward intolerance which is associated with human tenancies toward exclusivity. TOLERANCE need not be indiscriminate TOLERANCE of behavior patterns which undermine diverse ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION. There are tragic consequences associated with lifting any ESSENTIAL FOUNDATION for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION or any person, group, tribe, state, nation; goal, idea, ideal, value, principle, or technology --- to the level of an absolute; i.e., to be the focus of ultimate concern and the ground of being willing to make ultimate sacrifices in personal and communal integrity. Such is the nature of idolatry. Tragically often idolatrous intolerance has undermined and/or inhibited the development of integrative personal relationships, perceptions, insights, and articulations which have transcend traditionally honored boundaries based upon: race, religion, age, sex, nationality, language, politics, gender, education and/or wealth. We need to transcend such idolatry in order to promote and facilitate INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION. UNCONTROLLABLES There are many different UNCONTROLLABLE realities which are ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION; e.g., hopes, aspirations, yearnings, desires, visions, dreams, fears, motivations, attitudes, perceptions, assumptions, expressions, relationships, and friendships. Of course there are additional realities of similar kinds which are also UNCONTROLLABLES that are ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION. The great number of them makes it difficult to be definitive about what should be done in each circumstance! In what sense are the above UNCONTROLLABLE realities? They are UNCONTROLLABLE in the sense that we cannot control other people's experiences of their own UNCONTROLLABLE realities. Neither can we control our own UNCONTROLLABLE realities in conformity to other people's demands that we do so in ways which will satisfy other people. This is NOT to say that we cannot influence them! We can influence our own and each other's UNCONTROLLABLE realities! We cannot, however, have full control over them so as to make them be/do as we/others choose that they should be/do. Neither can we make them conform to any set of pre-scriptions, pro-scriptions, commandments or scriptural specifications. It is foolish and collusive to presume to control (or to appear to control) the above kinds of UNCONTROLLABLE realities. We do need to lay ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS for INTEGRATIVE COOPERATION --- upon which we can build honest cooperative efforts to influence our own and each other's UNCONTROLLABLE. We do need to learn to respect and tolerate each other's experiences of each other's UNCONTROLLABLE realities. Such respect and tolerance need not entail affirmations that our diverse UNCONTROLLABLE REALITIES should be in control of our own or other people's lives! In general, UNCONTROLLABLE REALITIES should not be permitted to dominate our consciousness, decisions, or behaviors. Neither should we repress our awareness of our own and/or each other's UNCONTROLLABLE REALITIES. Whenever our UNCONTROLLABLES are repressed from consciousness --- we cannot deal with them in ways which are well informed, reasonable, prudent and wise. Collusive games of mutual self deception are not helpful in dealing with our own or other people's UNCONTROLLABLE. If we are even tempted to be dishonest about our UNCONTROLLABLES --- then we are on the slippery slopes of decent into collusive games of mutual self deception about what is possible, and what is not possible. Our diverse and many forms of addictions are clear signs that many of us have slipped far into such collusive games of mutual self deception. Legalists often try to control each other's UNCONTROLLABLES by focusing much attention and effort upon articulations-of: laws, rules, regulations, disciplines, pre-scriptions, pro-scriptions, scriptural- interpretations, laws, commandments, confessions, judicial procedures, etc. Legalists often get involved in contentious/alienative contests over the details of such articulations and associated judicial procedures. Their preoccupations with issues of control undermine their possibilities for creative cooperation with each other. Whenever and wherever fears dominate our attempts to control UNCONTROLLABLES --- we fail in our attempts, we disintegrate, and our communities disintegrate. Fears do not lead us well. Fears do not lead us toward prudent learning from our own mistakes, from other's mistakes, or from tragedies which we have been led into our by trying to being faithful to our highest ideals, values and principles. Fear is a terrible teacher, leader, and master. These considerations pertain to many of the dilemmas which Christians face in their contentious relationships with other Christians who are "different" in one or many ways. Pretending otherwise is not the way toward being helpful, faithful, or cooperative. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
