Suppose that the rules of personal engagement in the professional paradigm are not explicitly articulated; but that there are many tacit rules which are forcefully implied with a great deal of ambiguity. Suppose that effective service in the profession requires a unusually high level of understanding and empathy for the people who are to be served --- but that the training for entry into the profession includes NO training designed to encourage the development of such understanding and empathy on the part of professionals. Suppose it is taken for granted that most of the required learning pertaining to inter-personal relationships --- is to occur "on-the-job" after formal technical training has been completed in an intensive program of five to eight years duration --- with little free time in which to develop and maintain skills in close personal relationships. Suppose that the people to be served are younger than the professionals --- with relatively less power and understanding than the professionals. Suppose the profession is dominated by males. Suppose there is an abstract articulation on the part of some of the professionals that it would be good to involve more females in the profession; because at the top levels of the profession there are less than ten percent females. Will it be possible for the profession to effectively involve more females in the profession --- without dealing openly and honestly with the challenges which will be posed by the development of intimate friendships and relationships between male professionals and young females who show interest in the profession, and its professionals? This is the situation which is faced by the physics teaching profession --- a profession which is lagging far behind most other sciences in finding effective ways to involve women of integrity in the top levels of the profession.
