Much as one should respond to an infectious disease. The sinner/evil-doer is viewed as "unclean" and likely to "infect" people who are "clean". Through separation of the "unclean" from the "clean" we can prevent the spreading of the disease. Unfortunately such efforts at using separation to prevent the spreading of the disease are efforts which engender alienation which is the essence of evil and sin. 2. With efforts to control the sinner/evil-doer through the use of coercion; e.g., with threats, punishments, social pressure, manipulative training, demands, commandments, prohibitions, proscriptions, prescriptions, taboos, etc. Unfortunately such coercive efforts engender alienation which is the essence of evil and sin. 3. Analytically-objectively-scientifically much as we might try to understand, predict and control impersonal objects and objective processes in the natural world through the understanding of natural laws. Here the assumption apparently is that there must be divine laws which should operate in the personal realm --- much as natural laws operate in the natural realm. The world is regarded in a dualistic mode with parallel realities: natural and divine, earthly and divine, of flesh and of spirit, perfect and imperfect, etc. When carried over and used in dealing with human relationships --- the paradigm of analysis, objectivity and science --- generates fragmentation, depersonalization, and knowledge which is lacking in love, because of its detachment from the "objects" of consideration. Again the efforts engender alienation which is the essence of evil and sin. Any way of dealing with evil and sin which fails to acknowledge the nature of evil and sin --- will fail to transcend the destructive aspects of the alienation which is the essence of both evil and sin. Evil and sin are the natural manifestations of alienation. Evil and sin are relational realities, rather than aspects of individual persons. Wherever and whenever there is evil and/or sin we need to ask questions such as: 1. Who are the major and minor participants in the relationships of alienation? 2. When, how, and why, did the participants begin to become alienated? 3. What are the kinds and amounts of power of the participants in the alienation? 4. What roles have coercion, violence, dishonesty, deception, perfectionism and judgementalism; played in engendering alienation? 5. What roles have corporate/communal failures, lacks, actions, reactions, and the like played in engendering alienation? 6. What ideas, ideals, values, goals and principles have led people to behave in alienative ways? 7. How do people rationalize their continuations of alienative conflicts and avoidance of conflict resolution efforts. 8. Have attempts to eliminate non-conformal behaviors engendered alienation and undermined creative peacemaking efforts by preventing true conflict resolution? 9. Are people playing collusive games of mutual self-deception in the manner of addicts and their codependent supporters? 10. Are people truly dedicated to promoting both personal and communal integrity --- or are they indifferent to both personal and communal integrity? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
