Imperfect. 2. Alienative 3. Pretentious 4. Arrogant 5. Provincial 6. Limiting 7. Coercive 8. Violent 9. Harmful 10. Discouraging All of us are not sinful in the same ways. We choose our own favorite ways of being sinful. We praise our own favorite sinful ways. We criticize each other's favorite sinful ways. We alienate ourselves from each other. SOMETIMES, our sinful ways can be helpfully seen as contrasting in ways hinted at by the following columns of words; HOWEVER, it is not ALWAYS helpful to see our sinful ways as contrasting in the ways hinted at by the following columns of contrasting words. SOMETIMES, it is helpful to see the words on the left (below) as inter-related in ways which contrast with how words on the right (below) are inter-related; HOWEVER, it is NOT ALWAYS helpful to see words on the left as inter- related in ways which contrast with how words on the right are inter-related. The pattern of correlations is NOT ALWAYS clear. God's patterns are NOT ALWAYS entirely regular. Consider the following words as pointers to various favorite ways of being sinful. We often regard our own favorite way of being sinful as the key to righteousness. ARROGANCE INDECISION PRETENTIOUSNESS TIMIDITY SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS SHAME-FULLNESS PERFECTIONISM INDIFFERENCE WORKAHOLISM INDOLENCE DOMINANCE SUBMISSIVENESS HARSHNESS WEAKNESS OVERBEARING LAZY DEMANDING SPINELESS PATERNALISTIC UNDISCIPLINED INTRUSIVE UNRESPONSIVE FORMAL SPONTANEOUS CONFORMAL CREATIVE CONTENTIOUS LAX OBJECTIVE INTIMATE MANAGERIAL PERSONAL CONTROL TOLERANCE While some of us are often proud of choosing to be sinful in ways which are pointed to by words on the left --- others of us are more often proud of choosing to be sinful in ways which are pointed to by words on the right ---- and do not regard our own ways as being sinful. Yet others of us are inconsistent and are about as often proud of choosing to be sinful in ways which are pointed to by words on the left as on the right --- and are proud of our flexibility and lack of sin. People who follow each of the above three kinds of patterns often find it difficult to understand, respect and cooperate with people who follow a pattern other than their own pattern --- and often are proud of their chosen beliefs, convictions and principles which lead them into patterns of exclusivity and alienation. People who follow one discernible pattern often regard themselves as righteous and free of sin; and consistently regard people who follow another pattern as sinful, evil and unworthy of being accepted into patterns of open/honest dialogue within intimate relationships. Various patterns of disrespect for each others' patterns of choice of favorite ways of being sinful --- lead to tragic patterns of alienation and so to the disintegration of personal and communal integrity. No one pattern of choice of favorite ways of being sinful is perfect or best in any ultimate way which leads to the enjoyment of the kingdom of heaven. Intolerance is not the key to the kingdom of heaven. Our choices of favorite ways of being sinful tend to correlate with our choices of favorite preoccupations such as those pointed to by words in the following two lists: PRESCRIPTIONS DESCRIPTIONS PROSCRIPTIONS STORY-TELLING LAWS/RULES LOVE/FRIENDSHIP JUDGEMENTS FORGIVENESS CONDEMNATIONS RECONCILIATIONS PROPRIETY AUTHENTICITY COERCION LIBERATION DIAGNOSIS HEALING OBEDIENCE ENCOURAGEMENT DEFENSE HONESTY APPEARANCES OPENNESS We tend to be proud of our own choices of preoccupation and to feel righteous in our choices. We tend to be critical of other people's contrasting choices of preoccupation, and to feel that they are "less" than we are because of their improper choices. We tend not to be able to trust, understand, respect and work-with people who make choices of preoccupations which are complementary to our own choices of preoccupations. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
