We will do well and be well when we learn to treat each kind of conformist and non-conformist in an appropriate way; for the differences between them are often important differences. When we are confronted with a conflict between peoples --- we may do well to ask what kinds of conformists and/or nonconformists they are. Asking the following questions (but not necessarily in the following order) may be helpful. The questions should be asked about each person, not about a "class of persons". Is the person, while engaged in a particular behavior pattern, being: 1. Conformal, non-conformal, or other? 2. Creative, destructive, or other? 3. Coercive, non-coercive, or other? 4. Tolerant, non-tolerant, or other? 5. Defensive, non-defensive, or other? 6. Fearful, confident, or other? 7. Secure, insecure, or other? Some insecure, fearful, conformal people are threatened by people who are NOT preoccupied with issues of conformity. Such insecure, fearful, conformal people are prone to be intolerant, defensive and coercive when they feel threatened by the life styles of creative, tolerant, non-conformal people. They seek security which they think can exist only when people conform and are preoccupied with issues of conformity. Some healthy, responsible non-conformists seek to be non-threatening; but find that being healthy, responsible non-conformists is inherently threatening to insecure, fearful, conformal people who are preoccupied with issues of conformity. The latter people are often playing collusive games of mutual self deception --- games which the healthy people threaten --- merely by being present with their open and honest patterns of behavior. Depending upon what order the questions above are asked in --- and depending upon the variety of answers elicited by particular people's patterns of behavior --- we may recognize many subtly different kinds of conformists and non-conformists; and recognize the roots of many different kinds of conflicts between, among, and within them. Such recognitions can help us in our work to resolve conflicts, and so to be peace-makers who are openly members of God's Household. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
