Who is guilty? Who is at fault? Who is evil? Who is good? Who is dammed? Who is saved? Preoccupations with such questions lead naturally to misunderstanding, suspicion, alienation, conflict and violence between opposing groups of people who answer the questions in contradictory ways. Such questions are often answered in dichotomous ways which split people into two opposing groups. The groups cannot tolerate each other because each other's presence is perceived as a threat to their own security. Each group's security is based upon its unquestioned belief in the ultimate virtue of their own way of framing and answering what they regard as the key questions of life. The other group's presence threatens that unquestioned belief by asking different questions and/or answering the same questions in different ways. Opposing groups are bound to degenerate into unresolved conflicts and violence if they: 1. Are seeking to be superior to other inferior peoples. 2. Are prone to unbalanced preoccupations and exclusivity. 3. Defensive because they feel insecure/vulnerable. 4. Are not seeking both personal and communal integrity. 5. Are not committed to being true to themselves and others in open and honest dialogue. 6. Respect deception and dishonesty as acceptable means to achieve "good" ends. 7. Respect coercion, controls and violence as means to force people to behave "properly". The nature of what people focus their attention upon with great concern plays a major role in leading them towards or away from personal and communal integrity. If people have little concern for personal and communal integrity, they are unlikely to enjoy personal and communal integrity. If people are greatly concerned with conflict, they are likely to be engaged in great conflicts. If people are determined to be better than other people and so in control in high places, they are likely to drag people down into the gutters of life. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
