They see only the yes or no voting of traditional parliamentary processes. With only traditional yes or no voting each suggestion of what might be a common ground can easily become a contentious fight over whether or not that one suggestion merits high billing. Battle lines are drawn. People take up positions on opposite sides of the battle lines. Egos are put on the lime. Accusations and recriminations fly. Common ground is not achieved, and conflict is exacerbated. When the possibilities of priority voting are recognized and affirmed it is possible to draw up lists of positive affirmations and suggestions --- and to ask participants to indicate which ones they regard as worthy of being priorities, which ones should be long term goals, which ones should properly be ignored, and which should be negated because they are very likely to be disintegrative. Once the priority votes have been cast it is a relatively simple matter to assign weights to them, to rank order all affirmations/suggestions in terms of total weighted votes which supported/negated them and then separately find which of the highly ranked items received net-affirmative support from a majority of the participants. High priority support from a minority is not adequate grounds for the formation of a consensus that an affirmation or suggestion is fully worthy of consensus support. Luke-warm support from a majority of all participants is likewise not adequate grounds for saying that a suggestions or affirmation is worthy of consensus support. It takes a combination of both kinds of affirmations to indicate a clear consensus. Priority voting facilitates letting contentious suggestions fall by the wayside --- without engaging in alienative conflicts over them --- while the participants are discovering that there are integrative suggestions upon which they can all agree whole-heartily.
