We cannot with integrity expect to lead those same people in finding and following wise patterns of response to those human dilemmas. Neglect, ignorance, and exclusivity in regards to dilemmas do not form the foundation for wise responses to those dilemmas. Conflicts among human ideals, values, principles, goals, aspirations, attitudes, beliefs, convictions, fears, priorities, needs, desires, and their like are central to many human dilemmas. All such conflicts are essentially reflexive in nature. They are not objective realities. Accurate measurements, computations, control- led experimentation, reproducibility, predictability, convergent thinking, manipulations, and the eliminations of ambiguity and mystery are not characteristic features of wise responses to such dilemmas. Thus scientists who are incarnations of the objectivists' paradigm are not qualified to lead us in finding and following wise ways of responding to such dilemmas; for scientists are likely to respond to them as technical problems rather than as human dilemmas. Scientists are unlikely to recognize the difference between a human dilemma and a technical problems, and tragically treat dilemmas as if they were technical problems. To find leaders wise in dealing with human dilemmas we need to identify people who with personal and communal integrity deal honestly with the reflexive aspects of human dilemmas without excluding from consideration the relevant objective facts which are part of the context within which the dilemmas exist. People who are prone to any kind of exclusivity are unlikely to lead wisely in the presence of a human dilemma. Thus technocrats are not wise leaders in the face of dilemmas, no matter how respected they may be as highly trained technicians. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
