There is the somewhat accidental misleading statement which occurs because of a careless telling of less than the full truth. If such dishonesty is not part of a web of dishonesty, it is not a matter for profound concern, and it means relatively little. There is the polite talk which avoids dealing with the reality of differences of opinion to avoid conflict. To be polite people will be agreeable, and appear to agree when they really do not. If such talk which is less than fully honest occurs only occasionally, rather than as part of a regular pattern, it is not a matter of profound concern, and is not a serious matter. There is the intentional telling of a web of true statements, carefully selected to leave other persons with false impressions by the (maybe subconsciously) planned and intentional leaving out of selected truths; all part of a design to manipulate others into believing something which is false. Such a pattern should be a matter for profound concern, for it means much regarding possible future relationships with the teller of such misleading truths. There is the offering of statements of questionable accuracy for the purpose of misleading others. Such individual statements might be looked at in selective ways, and a reasoned debate be held as to whether or not the individual statements were true. Yet, as part of a designed web they are intentionally dishonest and manipulative. Such a web of misleading statement should be a matter for profound concern, for it means a great deal regarding the probable disintegration of future relationships with the teller of the questionable statements. There are the statements which are offered in the context of proffered sincerity; yet are outright false statements which cannot be reasonably argued to be true. Such statements are usually part of a web of deceit intended to manipulate another for personal advantage. They are a clear sign of immediate danger to the integrity of self, others, and the community. They need to be confronted with charitable honesty. There are the self-talk statements a person makes TO SELF and which deny personal involvement in dishonest behavior, and/or deny that any such involvement in dishonesty is significant, and means nothing of any importance. Such denials indicate an advanced stage of personal disintegration. They need to be honestly admitted TO SELF AND OTHER, else personal disintegration will progress out of control. There are the statements a person makes to self AND OTHERS which deny personal involvement in dishonest behavior. Such statements indicate a more advanced stage of personal and communal disintegration. They need to be honestly admitted to SELF AND OTHERS in public settings, else personal and communal disintegration will progress out of control. There are patterns of statements which a GROUP OF PEOPLE MAKE TO SELF AND OTHERS to form a coherent web of deceit as part of a serious collusive game of mutual self deception. Such statements indicate an even more advanced stage of personal disintegration; for it is apparently impossible for participants imprisoned in such an advanced and sophisticated web to extricate themselves. Each level of dishonesty indicates a level of lack of interest in honest intimate personal relationships; and a corresponding level of interest in manipulating other people's impressions and behaviors. When people are not interested in getting to know each other honestly, they are bound to become trapped in patterns of mutual self deception. Each level of dishonesty has serious implications as regards the practical consequences of people being misled by particular misleading actions. Even more serious, however, are the implications of the addictive attitudes, beliefs, desires, assumptions, values, ideals, etc. which each level of dishonesty indicates. The core of the disease of dishonesty resides in addictive attitudes, beliefs, desires, assumptions, values, ideals, etc. It is futile to try to inhibit dishonesty itself, without dealing honestly with the core of the disease of dishonesty. Dishonesty is a progressive disease and process, not a static condition. Each level of dishonesty evokes additional levels of dishonesty to cover for the earlier instances of dishonesty. Dishonesty is a progressive disease because it grows in proportion to the present level of dishonesty. To avoid people's suspicion we try to make our dishonest presentations appear to be coherent; by trying to make coherently dishonest presentations. Each misleading presentation thus evokes additional misleading presentations to conceal the earlier dishonesty by being coherently dishonest. Any process which evokes more of like kind in proportion to how much of such kind there is, is a process of exponential growth---until some limiting catastrophic processes sets in. Dishonesty which is initially designed to mislead and manipulate others soon multiples and matures, and has the effect of misleading and manipulating the originators of the dishonesty. To view themselves as coherent people the originators of dishonesty must tell themselves lies about themselves, so that they appear to themselves as worthy of respect; their own respect. But at some level such people know that their self-talk is dishonest and not worthy of respect; so they cannot honestly respect themselves, and so they have low self esteem. The internal tension between the truth that they subconsciously know about themselves, and the lies that they semi-consciously tell themselves in self-talk; leads them to become tense, nervous, irritable, ill-at-ease, diseased, impatient, and both out-patients and in-patients at medical service and health recovery centers. Manipulative procedures which do not honestly deal with the core of the disease of dishonesty cannot effectively deal with the medical problems of people who are tense, nervous, irritable, ill-at-ease, diseased, impatient, and both out-patients and in-patients at medical service and health recovery centers because of the disease of dishonesty. Dishonest technical experts in medical procedures cannot help to restore the health of dishonest patients, without first entering into open and honest personal dialogue regarding the core of the disease of dishonesty. No level of technical sophistication or amount of technological manipulation can helpfully substitute for honestly and charitably dealing with the core of the disease of dishonesty.
