Responsibility is inconvenient and rebellion against responsibility is natural. Self wants to be independent. Rebellion against responsibilities which are articulated by others is a convenient way to avoid inconvenience, to be free to do what self wants to do now. Rebellion against responsibilities is seen as a way to freedom and independence. There are practicalities in life. Self's practical problems need to be solved. It is convenient to believe that it is other's responsibility to solve self's practical problems. Self's problem is to get other's to accept their responsibility to solve self's practical problems. Self's problem is to get others to take their responsibility seriously. Turn about is fair play. It is convenient to expect others to solve self's practical problems as part of their general responsibilities in showing love for self. The road to freedom and independence turns out to be a rocky road. Self becomes dependent upon others for solving all of self's problems and so totally dependent upon their ability to deal with all the dysfunctional behaviors which the presumed road to freedom includes. Self can not be proud of what self has accomplished so there is no basis for self esteem. Self must continue to depend upon others for strokes as well as for practical problem solving. Self can not with integrity believe such strokes are merited and so can not accept them as signs of love. Unmerited love is inconceivable and so there is no ground for hope. The presumed road to freedom and independence turns out to be a road to total dependence without meaning and satisfaction. The way back involves the acceptance of responsibility for dealing with practical problems in realistic ways, seeking to become free of the pathetic need to depend upon others to solve self's practical problem, and so becoming meaningfully independent and able to enter into meaningful interdependent personal relationships. Only when one can be depended upon is one free to enter into meaningful interdependent personal relationships. The first step to true freedom and interdependence is to accept responsibility and develop the capability to depend upon oneself to deal practically with self's fundamental problems of daily life.
