Jack is determined to force Jill into performing a certain entertainment act in his night club. Jack subtly threatens Jill with an entertainment opportunity shut-out if she does not do as Jack has decided. The mob stands by to back up Jack. Under such circumstances Jill can not easily engage in uncoerced behavior. It will be a miracle if she does. Uncoerced behavior is most common in communities which are dedicated to facilitating the development of bother personal and communal integrity. In such a community none of the members are trying to determine the behavior of others. Opportunities are offered which expand the scope of alternative courses of action which might be chosen. People's behavior does not limit the alternatives open to others. In such a community people are not threatened by others and are not the victims of deliberate violence by some people against other people. Human coercion is a human effort to get other humans to behave like objects, in ways determined by some to force the victims of the coercion to do that which id decided upon by the coercer. Objects behave in deterministic ways, in ways which can be determined; according to laws of cause and effect. Coercers seek to cause people to behave as they want the people to behave, satisfying the desires of the coercers rather than satisfying the desires which are integral to the people making the decisions about how they themselves want to behave. Coercers seek to force free-will by manipulating the environment. To them human relationships are essentially manipulative. They do not realize the possibilities for intimate human relationships characterized by mutual liberation and fulfillment of each other's will in free dialogue. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
