He regards himself as responsible for the personal welfare of his workers. He is like a father to them. He takes steps to make sure none of them are harmed. Jack has heard rumors which make him suspect that in private Jill has been doing things which threaten the personal welfare of some of his workers. He has no evidence of wrong-doing and no worker has brought a complaint against Jill. No one has lodged a grievance that they have been harmed, that any contract or law has been violated, that anyone's fundamental rights have been compromised. Jack feels it is his responsibility to anticipate probable harm and to take steps to prevent harm. A stitch in time saves nine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Better early than late. Jack is a sensitive person and not given to making direct accusations when they are not justified. Jack calls Jill in and discreetly and gently makes inquiry to try to determine whether action on his part is required to prevent Jill's private behavior from harming his workers. Jack feels he must fulfill his duty to protect his workers. He does not want to be found to have been negligent in fulfilling that responsibility. He takes his authority seriously and intends to use it to fulfill his responsibility. He is not sure just who placed the responsibility upon him and where he got the authority to do what he feels must be done, but that does not get in the way of him doing what he feels he must do. Jill is not mature enough to call into question Jack's assumption of the responsibility to anticipate and prevent harm due to the private behavior of his workers. She does not know how to help Jack be less paternalistic towards his workers, to deal with them as mature adults. Jill is embarrassed by Jack's inquiries and does not know what her rights to privacy are. Jill feels threatened in vague ways by Jack's paternalistic behavior and acts sufficiently guilty to confirm Jack's suspicions about her. To fulfill his responsibility Jack fires Jill.
