Jack is suspicious of her motive. Jack would like to think that Jill wants to kiss him just because she desires to be mutually intimate with him just for himself. Jack fears that Jill has an ulterior motive which is not evident. Jack is afraid that Jill's motive is an instrumental motive, that kissing him is a tool for getting something according to some calculated procedure. Jack is concerned that what Jill wants is that for which a kiss would be a means. That concern by Jack changes the anticipated meaning of the desired kiss. Unknown to Jack Jill's desire is genuine. Jill has not ulterior motive. She is simple with integrity. Jack's suspicions, fears and concerns are not based upon knowledge of Jill, all the same they are real to Jack and spoil his pleasure. Jill can not understand Jack's behavior. Jill does not know about Jack's suspicions, fears and concerns any more than Jack knows all of Jill's simplicity and integrity. Jill can not imagine or conceive the duplicity and computational behavior which Jack fears. She is too simple with integrity to do that. Thus she can not understand Jack's behavior. If Jack and Jill were able to communicate openly, honestly and convincingly with each other and with integrity they would be able to understand each other and each other's behavior more meaningfully. Jack and Jill, however, go to schools which are dominated by the subjective thoughts of strict behaviorists who deny the reality of the subjective dynamics which are central to the relationship between Jack and Jill. To the strict behaviorist only that which can be observed objectively by a separated observer is important enough to be the subject of conversation. Jack and Jill can not make sense of each other's behavior, do not get acquainted, and go their separate lonely ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
