Absent such time out for reflection---you may never discover that you are the victim of commitments to naive ideals. Commitments made early in life are often made with no awareness of the consequences. When such naive commitments lead to disintegration, frustration, alienation, and violent conflict---it is wise to take time out to reflect upon personal and communal ideals. It is the nature of ideals to be reflexive. Ideals pertain to the behavior of the people committed to the ideals. Making a commitment to an ideal is not an objective act. Reflecting upon one's own ideals is not an objective act. One can not reflect upon other people's ideals---without thereby reflecting upon one's own ideals. Reflecting upon any ideals takes one outside the domain of objective behavior, even when the ideals pertain to being objective. Jack's ideal is to force Jill to genuinely love him. Such an ideal is self defeating; the ideal defeats itself, because it lacks integrity and undermines the integrity of those committed to it. People who become committed to such a naive ideal defeat themselves--- unless they take time to reflect upon the consequences of their naive commitments. Professor O. B. Jective's ideals is to avoid self- referential behavior which is subjective, and therefore unreliable. The professor is committed to avoiding subjective judgments and so is committed not to engage in reflection upon the consequences of his commitments. He and his respected colleagues are committed to helping each other engage in only objective behavior. They and the scientists whom they respect are participating in a game of mutual self-deception which keeps them from reflecting upon their commitment to believe that all their professional behavior is objective. By the rules of their game they are not permitted to reflect upon the consequences of their commitments to objectivity. Professor O. B. Jective can not reflect wisely upon the arms race he is promoting. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
