People who are ultimately committed to the support of ideals which are in conflict with each other---are logically committed to courses of action which will bring them into conflict with each other; unless they are also committed jointly to ideals which will guide them in finding reconciliation among their ideals through creative conflict resolution. Violence is an expression of a desire to see one's own ideals prevail against other's ideals---which seek to prevail against one's own ideals. Unless there is a common commitment to reconciliation and dialogue--- violence or apathy are the inevitable alternatives. Personal and communal integrity are possible only through some kind of commitment to integrity---as an ideal which transcends other ideals in the service of integration of both persons and communities. Integration is facilitated by people who clearly perceive disintegration in its various manifestations: alienation, estrangement; coercion, manipulation, control and rejection of people as whole beings; exclusivity, elitism, authoritarianism, arrogance; injustice and corruption due to unbalanced concentration of power; specialization which undermines balanced perception; and many other forms. Disintegration can best be recognized when it is perceived as the violation of integrity; integrity which is valued as an ideals which gives coherence to all other ideals. Disintegration can creatively dealt with --- when it is clearly recognized as undermining the coherence and meaning of all other ideals. It is particularly tragic when, in the service of subsidiary ideals, people do things which undermine the integrity which provides the coherence and meaning of the ideals they presume to serve. No meaningful ideal is properly served by actions which bring about the disintegration of personal and communal integrity. With this in mind it is possible to assess how properly people are serving the ideals and values which they claim to be serving. Clarity in such assessments is essential to personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
