Objectivity is not the way. Self can not reliably treat self as a separate object. The fruits of such pretense are not reliable---even if they are called objective. Self analysis is not the way. Self analysis entails the taking apart of the object of analysis. Self-analysis would thus entail the violation of the integrity of both the object of analysis and of the analyzer. Knowledge based upon the violation of the integrity of both the knower and the known---is not reliable knowledge. Understanding which is confirmed through prediction and control is not the way. Enjoyment comes through freedom from patterns of behavior which are entirely predictable. To the degree that an intimate friend knows you personally, the above considerations apply to the knowledge of the friend about you, and to your knowledge of the friend. To the degree that an other person, even an "expert" does not know you personally, the knowledge of you is not reliable about you as a unique person; it is only generalized knowledge. Self knowledge is prone to be dominated by others' expectations and self-expectations; with various mixtures of desires, hopes, ideals, fears, anxieties, guilts, etc. Knowledge which is born of such considerations is not reliable and not likely to lead to joy. Pure research is unlikely to lead to the enjoyment of reliable self-knowledge---because pure research almost always end up alienated from the world of real daily personal life. Applied research is likely to get trapped in the prisons of traditional attitudes, logic and expectations. The way to reliable self knowledge is the way of balancing the demands of personal and communal integrity---so that all members of a community are free to be safely open and honest in dialogue, knowing each other reliably because each genuinely wants to really know each other as they really are; with their various mixtures of desires, hopes, ideals, fears, anxieties, and guilts.
