Such teachers take their job to be to maximize the labors of the students without regard for maximization of the fruits of those labors. They feel that without their prodding, the students will seek to avoid work; e.g., by seeking guidance to minimize how much work is involved in getting assignments done. The teachers assume that the goal of the students is not learning, but just getting assignments done. Since only finite assignments may be made, the teachers believe that to maximize learning they must maximize the work required to get the assignments done. This entails minimizing the amount of guidance given to students. Thus many teachers have a perception of their students' motivations and of their roles as teachers---which guides them as teachers to minimize the guidance which they are willing to offer students who come to them for guidance. Clearly the learning of students might be increased by guidance from teachers which would help students know how best to spend their finite amount of time and energy to maximize their learning. Not all ways of spending time and energy are likely to be equally fruitful. The teachers know better than students which are the ways which are most likely to be fruitful, and with the proper attitude towards their students the teachers might help their students learn more than the students will learn if they are merely commanded to spend as much time as possible on assignments---without guidance. Students who go to professors in search of guidance and help do not understand the nature of graduate school. They do not understand that graduate school is a contest between professors whose purpose it is to demonstrate that the students are not worthy of an advanced degree, and the students whose purpose it is to show that they are worthy. The professors are the referees in this contest, and some students are misguided in thinking that the professors are on the same side as the students. Some of the professors are also confused about their role in the contest, but the majority of professors generally succeed in keeping professors on a team fighting to defeat the graduate students.
