Some people see morality in terms of whether or not a specific set of do's and don'ts are honored. Other people see morality in terms of whether or not people seek to open, keep open, and deepen channels of communication. The first group emphasize laws and tends to be legalistic. The second group emphasize honest dialogue and tends to be lovers. The legalist group believes in obedience and tends to become the victim of charismatic leaders and institutions. The Medieval Roman Catholic Church, Hitler, the Nazi Government, the U.S. House Un-American Activities Committee, and moralistic religious sects illustrate the logical extremes. They illustrate the alienation which originates when there is confusion about what is essential to human fulfillment. Attempts to enforce do's and don'ts logically entail formal and informal excommunication as punishment and so the generation of alienation. Because of alienation and confusion many of the behaviors of the members of a group are perceived as immoral and meriting the punishment of excommunication. As as result people are further alienated and unable to listen intimately to the insights of each other. Legalists have a hard time listening to lovers, because the legalists are so compulsively preoccupied with do's and don'ts and the technologies of enforcing them. Legalists divide the world into two camps, the "good" people and the "evil" people. To be "good" is to favor the "good" people and set up defenses to protect the "good" people from the "evil" people. The legalists of the world have divided it into two camps, each of which says that the other one is the "evil" camp and the sufficient reason for destroying the economic health of the "good" camp in a futile race for military superiority over the "evil" camp. To the legalists of the world, the whole thing is very logical, no matter how alienative it is, and no matter that it may end in destroying all living creatures on Earth. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
