The essence of reason is studying differences. "Good" is often defined as that with which we are comfortable, "evil" as that with which we are uncomfortable. The "good" people are those who comfort us. The "evil" people are those who cause us to be embarrassed. The most "reasonable" people tend to trust their objective tendencies more than their subjective insights, and so feel more comfortable with objective realities; so such people tend to objectify the comfort they feel when they are with those people who most comfort them---the "good" people of their lives. Thus reasonable people tend to objectify the differences between "good" people and "evil" people---and these differences often have to do with the degree to which people approach realities either objectively or subjectively. The dynamics of human affection thus tend to lead people to respect the analysis which says that it is good to trust objective differences and perceptions, but it is not good to trust subjective differences and perceptions. Thus those persons who are different than the "good" people who make this analysis tend to be labeled as "evil", and their perceptions of the subjective biases which motivate and direct the analysis are discounted as the work of the devil. In a society which assigns to females the subjective roles, such evil people are often regarded as being witches in an objective sense, and a major problem is to find objective means of telling the differences between "witches" and people whom you can trust and be comforted by. According to this line of reasoning the people whom you can most trust and be comforted by are those people who put the least trust in subjective awareness of comfort and being comforted. They trust objective approaches to reality and understanding, and so approach and seek to understand other persons in objective ways, rather than seeking to be in intimate dialogue with and comfort them. Thus the trust in such "reasonable" people is misplaced, and alienation which is evil in a most profound sense is the ultimate result of the faulty analysis. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
