There is no rejection implicit in an admission of finitude---and so a pattern of participating in only a finite portion of all possible relationships. There is implicit in rejection an aversion towards the rejected relationship, possibly a fear of getting involved in it. Involvement in some relationships may be regarded as "evil", and so the grounds for excommunication. Excommunication involves passing judgment, aliena- tion, banishment, and in some instances imprisonment. Each of these may take explicit or implicit forms, as often as not---being objectively not evident to the casual observer. Excommunication in its various forms tends to involve various forms of rejection. People reject participation in some kinds of relationships---because they fear the rejection of excommunication. Through rejection people lose touch with essential realities such as feelings, emotions, sensory experiences, spiritual relationships, and other people. Such rejections involve dishonesty, a refusal to acknowledge such realities, a pretense that they are not real or important. Through rejection they cease to be foci for attention. Attention tends to be focused upon realities of more limited natures, realities which are not perceived as threatening---even though focusing exclusively upon them may be so deadening as to render those so focused as good as dead---totally insensitive to their environment. People who are insensitive to their changing environment cannot adapt to it so as to survive meaningfully. For this reason rejection is not an effective strategy for meaningful survival.
