Such recognition and charitable responses will occur only rarely if it is assumed that alienative transactions are objective realities and/or are imputable to individuals as sole responsible agents. Alienative transactions are relational realities which are occasioned by individual choices (which may be alienative), within pre-existing social contexts (which may be alienative), involving social and individual expectations, traditions, rules, taboos, collusions, etc. (which may be alienative). Alienation is likely to be occasioned by attempts to deal with alienative transactions as if they were objective realities for which responsibility may be placed upon specific individual persons. Alienative transactions are not objective realities for which individual persons are responsible. It is alienative to punish/reward people in terms of whether or not their behavior is or is not alienative. Individual acts are not in and of themselves "sin- ful". The acts may be a part of alienative transactions which occur in a sin-full society; i.e., a society full of sin, alienation. Individual people are not in and of themselves "sinful". People may be members of a sin-full society; i.e., a society full of sin, alienation. A society does not cleanse itself of sin by choosing a scapegoat upon whom to place blame for its sin, its alienation. The society cannot cleanse itself by the use of a sacrificial lamb. To cleanse itself of sin a society must learn to recognize and charitably deal with alienative transactions as relational realities for which all members of the society share responsibility---in that all help create the context for the transactions. Some members of the society may have great opportunity in individual situations to act in reconciling ways; such opportunities need to be recognized and fulfilled to the best of each persons ability. It must be recognized that the work of reconciliation may be subverted by unwise assumptions regarding how to go about dealing with alienative transactions and relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
