In the objective domain the object which is perceived does not itself perceive; therefore the perceptions of the other's perceptions cannot play a significant role. In the objective mode it makes not sense to talk of Jack perceptions of Jill's perceptions of Jack. In the objective mode such reciprocal perceptions cannot be dealt with. The electron does not perceive me making measurements of it; the electron's internal structure is not affected by my perception of it---because the electron has no internal structure to be changed. My emotional state cannot be affected by my perception of the electron's feelings about me watching it. Jack, however, may be deeply affected by Jill's response to his perception of her. Objective relationships are quite different from intimate personal relationships. Technocrats often assume that helpful insights into the dynamics of intimate personal relationships may be based upon objective analysis. They have great faith and believe that objective analysis of elementary parts of people will yield knowledge offering a complete understanding of human behavior. They offer the predictive power of primitive social science as proof--- forgetting that prediction is not one of the primary foci in intimate personal relationships. In intimate personal relationships the ability to predict another person's behavior is not equivalent to being involved in a meaningful personal relationship; prediction does not prove the existence of mutual understanding---unilateral understanding not being highly valued. Mutuality is central to meaningful personal relationships, but not to successful objective understanding, prediction, and control. Mutual respect and consideration is essential to meaningful friendship, but not to objective relationships. Recognition of others' needs is central to coherent social relationships, but not to a coherent theory of objective relationships--- for in the objective domain objects do not have needs. the objective and subjective realms are to be understood in quite different terms.
