Students' stages of cognitive and emotional development play a central role in defining the context in which the teacher works. In some instances becoming informed of those stages may be priority foci for attention---especially if the teacher is uninformed about such matters. The students' career goals, aspirations, desires, fears, inhibitions, etc. also formulate the context and may be priority foci of attention if the teacher is not yet aware of such basic information. Since it is the student who is going to do the learning, it is the student who plays a central role in the helpful teacher's considerations. Lack of motivation, lack of student readiness, and presence of inhibitions can make the efforts of a teacher futile. They must be dealt with first, else attention focused upon skills and content may be for naught. The HELPFUL teacher relates skills and knowledge to the students as persons. Only when so related are the students likely to acquire the skills and knowledge as whole persons. If the students are treated as learning machines they are likely to act like learned machines at a later date, and not take proper consideration of non- mechanical aspects of persons. Thus the helpful teacher has as a central foci of attention the proper relationship between students and course context, and the students' perceptions of that proper relationship. The teacher plays a central role in creating the context in which students learn, and to do a creative job at this task the teacher must give careful attention to the context with which she or he begins the creative task. Inattention to beginning points can lead to getting lost. The first order of business is to know where one is beginning. The students' social context plays a central role in the students' learning. So also does the teacher's social context and patterns of social and a-social behavior.
