The not-so-helpful teacher passes judgments upon students who are the victims of confused misunderstandings---even when the confused misunder- standings are highly logical and carefully thought out on the basis of unconventional assumptions. The not-so- helpful teacher does not seek to understand the misunderstandings of students with learning difficulties, does not seek to discover the unconventional assumptions upon which some misunderstandings are founded. The sources of confusion can be very logical. Confused thought can be highly structured in accord to well defined rules of analysis. The assumptions which serve as the foundations for confused thought may be just as sensible as conventional assumptions, but be incongruous with conventional assumptions---confusion originating in trying to work them into a theory thoughtlessly without recognition of their incongruity. The helpful teacher seeks to discover the details of students' confused understanding---eliciting from them just how they are thinking in order that the teacher may understand their confusion. The focus of the teacher is not so much the conventional thought processes, as the unconventional though processes of the student. By becoming familiar with the unconventional thought processes of the students the teacher becomes able to help the students examine their unconventional assumptions and unconventional thought processes in comparison to the conventional ones---and decide whether or not to become conventional in their assumptions and thought processes. In some instances the decisions to become or not become conventional may in fact be value decisions, not decisions regarding the nature of objective reality. To pass judgment upon confused students and so to excommunicate them cuts the teacher off from any hope of helping such students. Such behavior on the part of a teacher clearly indicates a lack of concern for the welfare of the students, and a preoccupation with conventional assumptions and thought patterns. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
