Human conflict pertains to intentions, desires, goals, objectives, expectations, and other future-oriented realities---rather than to automatic patterns of process described by objective laws. Often conflict appears to be grounded in the past, in the memories of the participants. Yet, as indicated above there is a profound sense in which conflict is rooted in future-oriented aspects of persons. Traditional ways of analyzing cause-effect relationships do not admit to future events being causative factors; so to that extent they are not likely to offer ways of understanding human conflict. Conflicts reside in the relationships between the seats of wills---persons and portions of persons; e.g., sub-brains and nervous systems which are programmed to serve a purpose. The various portions of the human brain characteristic to the reptilian, mammalian, and sapiens stages of evolution may constitute sub-brains which may be in conflict with each other on occasions. Within the cortex there may be a split in which portions of the cortex are differently specialized or programmed---and so as to be in conflict. Human sub-cultures interject imperatives into human beings which are often in conflict, causing a person to seek to serve two masters with but one body. When human values imply contradictory behavior patterns the human values occasion human conflict. The conflict occurs between complementary good values which are regarded as exclusively good---to the exclusion of each other's claim. Each conflicting value projects a different image of the future, and how it should be. Human conflict resolution becomes possible only as conflicts between values are resolved in terms of transcendent values which are held in common. Thus conflict resolution must focus upon the discovery/creation of transcendent values held in common. When people hold transcendent values in common they can resolve conflicts originating in secondary values by grounding their dialogue on the foundation of the agreed-to transcendent values. Thus people need to be in dialogue about what is most important. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
