Self perception occurs in a context which generates essential aspects of the self perception: feelings, judgments, guilt, pride, regret, acceptance, rejection, etc. In part self perception is seeing through the anticipated perceptions, feelings, judgments, guilt, pride, regret, acceptance, rejection, and the like of important others. Thus, important others help generate the context which generates essential aspects of self perception. Self perception is profoundly affected by important others' actual responses and anticipated responses to self perception. We rarely choose to perceive ourselves in ways which our important others will ridicule, reject, regard as foolish, etc. Self is not an objective reality, the nature of which can be determined by objective data gathering and scientific analysis. Self perception is not made more reliable or meaningful by objectivity. Self perception is a political process through which personal priorities are chosen. The element of choice is central to self perception. It is not a cut and dried process of seeing what is real as a reality which is independent of choices of the perceiver. How we perceive others depends upon our self perception. There is much about other persons which we can only intuit in terms of our self perception. Our intuition thus depends upon how we have chosen to perceive ourselves, and thus how we perceive others --- depends upon how we have chosen to perceive ourselves. The whole process is a political process of setting priorities in response to felt needs and perceptions of limited personal resources. We create our social realities in order to cope with our contextual perceptions of ourselves. Self perception is not likely to be understood unless it is understood in its political context, rather than regarded as a process of becoming aware of an independent reality in a value-neutral way. Values are central to self perception and to the healthy growth of selves of integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
