Jill's emotions are an essential and meaningful part of her life, because she grew up in a family in which sharing emotions was an integral part of the whole life of the family. Because Jack does not understand emotions he is threatened by the display of emotions. Emotions threaten the whole framework in terms of which he understands all that he understands. He presumes that he understands all that is worth understanding. To confront him with non-understandable emotions which are obviously central to life --- is to reveal the inadequacies of his understanding. Jill is strong enough in her adolescent understanding to buck the tide of Jack's scientific collusions. Jill decides to suppress her interest in science --- rather than to try to buck the tide of Jack's collusions against the expression of personal emotions in science class. Jill can not stand to repress her emotions, so she no longer sees Jack. Jack and other scientists are concerned that few females become scientists. Thus Jack and his non- emotional friends are devising objective ways of getting more females to become scientists. They are making objective studies of how frequently females do and do not decide to become scientists, and are computing correlation coefficients between all the objective measurements which they easily think of --- relating to who becomes scientifically orientated. They want to do the job properly, so they are taking care not to trust any subjective impressions based upon emotional conjectures. Speculations must first be validated by quantitative studies before they must be taken seriously. They talk to the females who have become scientists who are respected by males. They do not talk to Jill who does not want to talk to scientists because she is not up to challenging their collusions---besides she is too young and has not been trained to think objectively in any reliable way. Her feelings are not important enough to take into account in such an important matter. Besides, she is highly critical of scientists. The scientist who attempts to meaningfully understand the universe in exclusively objective terms --- is doomed to embarrassment. His program of objective analysis excludes focusing upon students who are enlivened by the powers to perceive process trends, have desires, experience enjoyment and disappointment, make decisions; and care about other persons' desires, joys, disappointments, decisions, and cares. The scientist presumes such personal traits will be the logical consequence of impersonal presuppositions about the nature of the elementary constituents of the universe. The scientist assumes that reality is what it is --- independently of the way the scientist approaches reality. Other people are part of reality. Thus the scientist assumes that other people are what they are independently of how they are approached; e.g., that their behavior will no depend upon whether they are approached as an inanimate object, or with tastefully assertive expressions of desire for sexual union. The scientist finds his own body to part of the objective reality. Handling his own body brings embarrassment because doing so exposes the inadequacies of his scientific presuppositions. If he can not understand his own body which is closest to him objectively, how can he hope to understand the whole universe as a collection of impersonal objects interacting with each other on a local basis? To avoid objective embarrassment the scientist avoids situations which are likely to confront him with expressions which can not be analyzed meaningfully on the basis of his basic presuppositions. This means minimizing personal relationships and intimacies, especially sexual relationships. Just as religious orders have avoided sexual distractions through sexual segregation, so scientists have avoided the embarrassments of sexual relationships through sexual segregation. By keeping attractive females out of their profession they have simplified their task of treating the universe as a set of interacting impersonal elements which can be understood in exclusively objective terms.
